What if the Philippines won in the Philippine-American War
Just wishful thinking. Would it's economy experience a boom or bust? Would it be just another Thailand or would the Japanese see it as easy pickings? Would this mean that the US wouldn’t be dragged into WWII? Will the moros in Mindano join the new republic?

The Japanese would likely invade the Philippines and establish a puppet state. The U.S will now have less of a presence in the Pacific but Japan could still consider them a threat. The U.S would be less likely to join WW2.

It may have evaded Pearl Harbor.
One of the main reasons the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in the first place was to destroy the US's large Pacific Battle Fleet stationed there and cripple US efforts in the Pacific. The bombing of the US fleet allowed them to take the East indies and The Philippines with ease, as the US was the only Nation with the firepower and will to fight them. An independent (and likely very poor) Philippines would've been virtually indefensible against Japanese Imperialist efforts in the Pacific. In fact, it probably would've been annexed before the war.

It could prevent Pearl Harbor but I think the US would've still looked for a way to join the war. After all, they still have economic interests in Asia. Given the time and propper administration, the Philippines could've been on par with Thailand at least but it still wouldn't be a match against Japan.

The Phillipines would've likely been like Korea in 1910, dirt poor, full of resources and easy to conquer. The USA might've even blocked trade to the Philippines if it lost the revolution.NanananotBatman wrote:It could prevent Pearl Harbor but I think the US would've still looked for a way to join the war. Japan wouldn't provoke the US into entering WWII. However, I also suspect that the Philippines would become an impoverished state and fail to establish itself as a powerful state. Some other power would seize control in a decade or two, most likely Japan.

It's possible it could become powerful, but most likely not.Big_Appa wrote:Japan wouldn't provoke the US into entering WWII. I doubt that. The main reason Japan forced the hand of the U.S. was to try and end the oil embargo they had against them. Japan figured that if they could string together hard-hitting victories in rapid succession, the U.S. would be forced to negotiate a truce and resume normal trading conditions with the Empire.
When Pearl Harbour failed to achieve the aims of the Japanese, the Empire decided to fortify the Pacific by conquering territory and surrounding itself with buffer states from which it could launch naval operations and air raids. That plan came to a halt at Midway though.
On topic, I think the Philippines would have suffered all the same as it has thusly, but it would still maintain its unique culture. Not much changes if the U.S. fails to conquer them.

That's not why. They destroyed the Pacific Fleet to hopefully kick the US out of the war so they could take the Oil-Rich Dutch East Indies with ease.Cold War Communist wrote:CptCrape wrote:It may have evaded Pearl Harbor.

They also wanted the U.S. to begin selling commodities to them again for the war effort. Hence, attack the U.S., knock out their fleet, force them to negotiate to their terms.

I don't know what Japan was thinking, usually when you attack a nation they counterattack, they don't drop to their knees and beg for mercy.Cold War Communist wrote:They also wanted the U.S. to begin selling commodities to them again for the war effort. That is exactly how Yamamoto felt about it, but nobody listened to him.
