How would History change if Christianity didn't rise?
Hey guys! Just thought of this interesting scenario and would love to hear peoples thoughts on it.
It is completely up to you whether that means Constantine I doesn't adopt it as the state religion of Byzantium or any other situation like that.
Remember this is just a friendly discussion and although it can be appropriate in this type of scenario, try and be civil and not cause religious arguments
How would the history of Europe/the World change had Christianity never came to popularity?

Well I could say that obviously Islam would be the "victorious" religion in the world.
The reason behind rallying the armies againt the Islamic invasion of Iberia was that Islam is a threat to Christianity.
If Christianity didn't spread out across Europe, the Europeans will mainly keep their conflicts between each others raging while at the same time the Muslim armies will conquer the most as they can of Europe and the Khalifa will try to spread out Islam to the European people just like the north African people got converted to Islam.
However, all what I have said is just speculations so there are many factors that I have neglected.

I think a lot of it would depend on how well Rome or it's successor states manage to resist the expansion of the Claiphates, and whether or not Islam becomes popular among the European population, or if Roman, Germanic, Celtic, Norse, Slavic, Greek etc. polytheism would still be popular. Things would probably be the same East of Arabia, Persia is conquered, Islam spreads to Indonesia, Hinduism stays big in India... but then Africa is kind of a mystery. Of course, Ethiopia is never Christianized and due to it's proximity to Yemen, I think it would likely become Islamic, as would the Somalis and Swahili coast, but the rest of the continent's religious makeup would depend, again, how well Rome/Byzantium could defend Egypt and prevent Islamic spread into Africa, and whether the East African Muslims decide to try and spread the religion across Africa.

Europe would probably be much more Islamic.

Rome would fall anyway, but the Europeans of the Middle Ages would continue worshipping Roman gods until they converted to some other religion later, most likely Islam.
I think there would be a rift within Islam, creating a third major denomination in addition to Sunni and Shia. This new denomination would be popular in Europe and would essentially fill the role of Christianity - e.g. the various wars in Spain would be between European Muslims and Sunni Muslims, the Crusades would be European Muslims trying to capture Mecca from Sunni Muslims, etc.

World history would be very different and as concecuence we would have a very different world today. Specially in the middle ages and later in the exploration era in witch sometimes the church was more powerful than some states. Despite this probably some other religion would take its place, probably Islam. This would mean that the center of progress and where global powers are would be The Middle East and not Europe.

Re: How would History change if Christianity didn't rise?
I don't see Islam rising without Christianity. Without Christianity, there is no religion that spreads to the extent of Christianity because of obvious reasons and how polytheistic religions work. Judaism is restricted to Israel because of how they saw their religion. They never tried the whole conversion in mass numbers thing. Without Christianity being associated with the glory of Rome and its influence spreading, I doubt Islam would have ever risen. Rome would still have fallen, but no one would be taking up its role as the church did in our time line. However, the glory of Rome survives. So that's a much bigger vacuum to fill so we could see people attempting to fill that vacuum. Rome might go back to its old ways and try to re-conquer all its territories. Or someone else might in the name of Rome? Basically, without the Church appointing a charlamegne as the successor of the Western empire, you will find it hard for rulers to conquer and fill that vacuum on their own and, even if they did, keep it. Only Rome can really replace Rome based off what we see of the kingdoms after Rome.
Basically, Rome can rise again (unlikely) or we'll have a Europe without the mixed culture (VERY likely). Also, Christianity played a role in the fall of Rome too. Not in the whole "it eroded roman values and took glory away from Rome" way. For one, yes, taking glory away from Rome played a role. Also, from the emperor since the Emperor was not second to God, where as the Roman religion deified their old emperors giving them a huge prestige boost. This would make it much harder for other people to replace them. I mean, look at Egypt. It had its changes of dynasties, sure, but they remained stable. Christianity, at least early on, created a rift between the Christians and the Roman elite. This destabilized the empire and it was seen as a failure since the empire couldn't get rid of that problem when they tried. I certainly agree that Christianity itself played a minor role in the fall, but its after effects were much larger. The old ways going away wouldn't directly influence the fall of something so great. But the fact that the old ways, which people looked back to as the glory days (But really, all people at all times look back at some imaginary glory days), were gone and the glory of Rome was forever bruised. What I'm trying to say is Rome would have remained for a longer time without Christianity. It still would have fallen but it'd establish a much bigger foot print (Is that even possible?) and without Christianity, Europe would define itself by Rome. It'd also be a smaller place? Since the Scandinavians, for example, were not part of the empire and even England never really got on that well with Rome.

You know, the forum has a section for Alternate History. This thread should be there.
