The Scottish Colonial Empire

What would have happened if the Scottish colony Caledonia wasn`t blockaded by the English and conquered by the Spanish?

After its civil wars diminished their resources and crop failures brought famines the Scottish decided that the only way to compete with the other European countries was to increase Scotland`s position in global trade. After failing to get money from Africa and the Indies the Scottish decided to spend 50% of their money to create a colony but was destroyed by an English blockade and a Spanish invasion and after two attempts the Scottish were left weakened which caused them to easily accept the Acts of Union 1707 which created the United Kingdom.

That's a hard question. It's possible Scotland could have become a world colonial superpower if the colony was highly profitable, causing further expansion into the Americas. However, most likely disease and natives would have brought an end to the colony if the English and Spaniards didn't, as I don't think Scotland will have had nearly enough money which is required to maintain a colony initially. So I think that the colony would have failed anyway however this time Scotland would have invested much more into it hoping to make it profitable, and as a result would have signed the Treaty of Union anyway. Just in a more desperate state.

The colony was a stupid mistake and personally I think we should have just ridden out the colonial era focusing on improving our economy and infrastructure instead of trying to compete with England, Spain and France over the Americas.

Only possible if they won against England in all wars or were an English Ally.

Yes, it was named New Caledonia and was part of the 'Darian Scheme', which was an attempt to build a late 17th century version of the Panama Canal just with out the canal part aka an overland trade route that connected the Atlantic and the Pacific. You can find out more about it on Wikipedia. What we are discussing is what would have happened if the colony didn't fail.

Ah ok. When you say New Caledonia I think of the island in the pacific. I didn't put two and two together.

Darien happens to be a terrible spot for a colony, so it likely would have failed eventually.
