How would the emancipation of slavery affect the Back-to-Africa movement? Would it become a US State, or a colony?

I personally think it depends on the amount of Americans on the area compared to the native population. In our timeline, the African-Americans became the most powerful group in Liberia and treated the other ethnicities as second rate citizens. They also proclaimed independence in 1847, long before slavery was outlawed throughout the United State, but were only recognized much later on by the US.

I highly doubt Liberia would stay in the US even if emancipation occurred much earlier. It would eliminate the main reason black Americans went there, and the native population, like those from the European colonies in Africa, would want to gain independence someday. Even though the US wouldn't decline in power post-World War 2, it might become too costly to maintain control and they might end up giving Liberia independence later on.

The reason the colony was set up in the first place was so that the US could deport freed slaves. If it survived to the civil war, I could easily see the US deporting hundreds of thousands of former slaves.
