Re: The Vietnam War
I think everyone can agree the Vietnam War was a defeat for the United States. Even if they never officially declared war, they sent thousands of troops to help South Vietnam, but had to pull out and a few months later South Vietnam surrendered and Vietnam to this day remains communist and it led to a loss of prestige and confidence in the US (The gulf war in 1991 would be the next time the US would directly participate in a actual war)

Re: The Vietnam War
I would say the war was a defeat for the USA, however, it was not the end of the world for them since it was not something extremely important, i mean, they were trying to stop communism but it did not hurt any americans directly.
All aside, the war was a terrible loss for all sides.

Defeat for the USA, complete failure of the reason for getting involved. Never forget in Nixon's own words he said South Vietnam would never last, and he just wanted a deal that would look good on America.
There's a good documentary on the War, 12 parts long too from the 80s.

Re: The Vietnam War
The Vietnam War spawned one of the most frustrating historical misconceptions I've ever come across. "They didn't let us win!"
There's a surprisingly large group of people who think invading North Vietnam would've fixed everything up just fine. Apparently, they've all memory-holed the Korean War, which was the last time the US wanted to invade a northern communist country sitting on China's border. Naturally, it didn't go well.

Re: The Vietnam War
We won in January 1973. We went there to teach the Vietnamese people how to defend themselves against a communist insurgency, and we succeeded. What people forget is that it was not the Viet Cong who eventually took over the South, but the North Vietnamese Army! Of course South Vietnam wasn't going to be able to withstand an invasion by an army directly supplied and funded by the Soviet Union. If the US Congress hadn't passed a law saying we weren't allowed to go back into Southeast Asia, we could have bombed the NVA's supply lines and halted their armored divisions short of Saigon in the spring of 1975. That would have put the war back to square one again.
The United States was not defeated militarily. We pulled out for political reasons. Period.
