I support Kosovo as an independent nation. Not because I don't respect Serbia, its just that Kosovo is just too culturally distinct from Serbia to not be independent.

jokes aside, I totally consider Kosovo an independent state, they want independence, they declared it, and they control their territory, and that's good enough for me. Same goes for Abkhazia (Sorry, Georgia, I love you, I really do, but they won their war of independence), Transnistria, Somaliland, Taiwan, all those guys.

It's ironic that Serbia would want to maintain a firm grasp on Kosovo, yet Serbian patriotism was rooted in a desire to be independent from Austria-Hungary and that happened to be the match to the wick of WWI.
With that said, Kosovo deserves its independence, though considering how strongly tied they are to Albania (culturally and historically considered a part of Greater Albania), I don't know how long that independence would last.

I personally recognize Kosovo.

I think that Kosovo does have a valid right to independence, similar to that of Abkhazia, Somaliland, Taiwan, and Catalonia. Whether or not I think it'll have it's independence easily gained, is another thing. But just as a thought, what if Serbia gained the Republic of Srpska, from Bosnia and Herzegovina, and let Kosovo secede.

If Bosnia and Herzegovina let Serbia annex the Republic of Srpska in exchange for some diplomatic, trade, or economically advantageous deal with Albania, and then Serbia let Kosovo secede to form it's own state, all parties would be at least begrudgingly satisfied?

At the turn of century, 60% of Kosovo's population was Albanian, it is 95% now. To be honest, Serbia has lost it's historic claim to Kosovo.

They have zero motivation to support an independent Kosovo.

Well, actually Serbs have a lot of reasons to support the independence of Kosovo. I love Serbia with all my heart, as many Russians do, but having Kosovo inside their borders would only cause problems.

It's a poor region, which has a lot of crime and where ideas of Islamic extremism are prominent. It will make Serbian economy smaller and allow local mafia to "invade" the major Serbian cities. Moreover, most people living there hate Serbia and some might start a new Civil war, even if the Kosovan gorvnment agrees to rejoin Serbia.

People also shouldn't forget Kosovo pretty much caused the break up of Yugoslavia. It was considered an "underdeveloped region" so a lot of money was taken from Croatia and Slovenia for that reason. But Kosovo was a part of Serbia, so it made it look like it was taking money from other republics, which made it the last straw in the events leading to the Croatian spring.

So, if I was a Serb, I would just leave this troublesome region alone, it doesn't worth it. That said, Kosovo should officially apologize for ethnic cleansing of Serbs, let go of majority Serbian regions (if those regions so desire) and guarantee the protection of Serbian cultural heritage.

I really don't see why nobody ever mentions this, the majority of serbs in Kosovo live in those areas. And any Serbians outside of that area could be resettled.

"Resettling" sounds like a recipe for disaster.

I would like to see Kosovo being part of Albania... sorry Serbians.

I don't like to see little countries in Europe, so why add another one in the list?, and having in mind that Kosovans are practically Albanians... I mean, Why not unify this two territories!?

Logically Kosovo should unite with Albania so that this larger Albania would have more negotiating power with the EU and rest of the world which raises the quality of life.

Ultimately, I believe a referendum should be held.

Kosovo shouldn't be a free independent country. It is a severely poor region with low quality of living and not many natural resources. I also don't think it should remain with Serbia as it causes them to spend more money on an area that doesn't want to be with them. I also don't want them to go with Albania because the Albanians will have to spend money on Kosovo as well. No idea what I think the best solution for Kosovo would be. If they stay with Serbia they will at least not plunge into total anarchy.

Kosovo is a country with ties to isis, they are constantly burning orthodox churches and opressing the serbian minority in a region that was historically serbian. If you ask me, Kosovo je srbija.

If Kosovo becomes independent they will collapse, they are better off staying with Serbia despite the ethnic difference, Serbia is doing them a favor. At least Montenegro could sustain itself pretty well.

Kosovo should have a right to self-determination. 95% of Kosovar citizens are Albanian Muslims; Kosovo is just too culturally, ethnically, and religiously distinct to be controlled by Serbia.

Kosovo should join with Albania or just be independent, Serbia doesn't have the best record of sustaining a multicultural state.

My personal opinion is that Kosovo should probably try to negotiate an exchange. The Serb majority in the north for the Albanian majority in the south.
