Chemical warfare in Syria Empty Chemical warfare in Syria

Just as things were getting slowly better... With the 2018 East ghouta offensive and the Douma chemical attack the syrian civil war has reached yet another low point. Most evidence seems to point towards Assad's responsibility, even though his motive would be very questionable. Given his history though it would certainly not be the first time he's used CW. There are also sources of Russian findings of rebel-build chemical factories. I also heard of the YPG finding such chemical factories in Aleppo a while back. Ofcourse nearly all info we have is tainted with propaganda and interests on both sides.
Who do you think did it and what should be done to stop it.

Chemical warfare in Syria Empty Re: Chemical warfare in Syria

It seems pretty clear to me that Assad is responsible. Chlorine was used against a rebel-controlled town, which was later surrendered to government forces. The US and EU both believe it was Assad, and I'm inclined to trust them more than I'd trust Russia or Iran.

As for what to do: who knows? The opportunity is years lost for an effective response. At this point, it's either Assad or anarchy. If the Syrian government collapses, either Al-Qaeda or ISIS will be the dominant military power in the region. And that's unacceptable.

Obama had the chance to contain this back in 2011 in a relatively bloodless manner, and he did nothing. Now the war has spiraled so far out of control that it won't stop until everyone is too exhausted to keep going. That could be decades from now.
