What if Justinian never attacked Italy?
The "renovatio imperii" project from Justinian was, as history taught us, far too ambitious. The Gothic Wars (535-553), the long Roman reconquest of Italy, brought to its knees a peninsula that was, at that time, prosperous and rich. My PODs are two: 1. Belisarius is never sent by Justinian in Italy, instead he fights the Persians in the East; and 2. The Ostrogothic kings attempt to integrate with the Roman people, for example by allowing intermarriages. They could have maybe stopped the Lombard invasion in 581, and then probably survived until Charlemagne and later. What do you think about it?
