What was the main reason for the German revolutions of 1848–49 failing?

That's a good question. You think with all this rebellion, the major powers would just let it happen right? Austria might've stepped in but the Hungarians were keeping them busy.

Hello, am a German American getting into my ancestral history. I'd like to know why the German States were in such disunion prior to the Unification by Prussia in the first place? You'd think that if they didn't unify, they'd be pushed around by France or Russia right?

It was mainly Austria's fault. After the Napoleonic Wars, Austria was so butthurt about losing the HRE so he tried to make his own...with the south German confederation. Also, Prussia never really took unification seriously until Bismarck came onto the scene.

The electorate of Brandenburg created Prussia after some time of owning the Duchy of Prussia within the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth after a while.

Why were the german states prior to german unification so prosperous, considering you had 3 big colonial empires which had a lot more resources and money?
