War of the Triple Alliance
Any thoughts on this bloody war?
Some battles include:
The naval Battle of Riachuelo
The Battle of Avay
The Battle of Curupayty and
The Battle of Cerro Cora
The Empire of Brazil joins an alliance with Argentina and Uruguay and goes to war against Paraguay led by president Solano Lopez.

It is indeed sad what happened to Paraguay. Some people blame the Brazilian Empire for obliterating nearly 60 to 70% of the paragayan population others say it was Solano's fault. One way or another, Solano's ambitions couldn't go far. Brazil also left the war with military prestige but contracted huge debts.
This war certainly shaped South America as it is today, and saw some uses of advanced ships and tactics at that time.

Pedro II forgot giving assistance and glory for veterans of war, and the officials of imperial army was highly corrupted, leading to 1889, where a positivism military coup take place ending the second reign...

I mean, what could he possibly do having no money to waste on that?
It seems inevitable that at some point the Empire would fall.
At least if Pedro managed to give them some prestige he could maintain stability until the end of the economic scars of the war.

Helping the soldiers isn't only by direct money. Having the military with him, will delay or even eradicate the chance of a fall of brazilian empire by political instability.
If Brazil resisted the abolition of slavery and Isabel taking the throne, the empire would be saved.

The economy was shattered by the war effort, but by the start of 1890, probably, with the right economic policies, would be fully recovered and growing more and more

It was all Solano's fault. Although Paraguay was a very strong nation at the time, a war against the Empire of Brazil and Argentina at the same time was insane.

Paraguay was not so strong compared to Brazil and Argentina together (Less manpower and equipment), they probably could beat Argentina alone, winning battles with minimum of losses, trying a lightning war to reach Buenos Aires, but against the 2 regional powers, insane mode, Paraguay fighting a war of attrition (like in real life) wouldn't be possible.

Re: War of the Triple Alliance
Solano was an idiot who started a war that he knew he could not win and killed more than half of his adult male population. I am not saying that Mitre was good, he was a useless leader who only made the war more complicated, but Lopez was just suicidal.

But they started it, and they had a chance to end it, but they just wanted to keep fighting.
