Griqualand Empty Griqualand

Post by fischyk Thu Jul 20, 2017 6:43 pm

One of the most interesting groups of people in Southern Africa are the Griquas. However, it is hard to find a lot of information on the two historical Griqua states. Also, I find it sad that they have mostly integrated with the South African Coloured population. Finally, what happened to one of their dynasties, the Waterboer family? From what I read they retain some customary role in their society.

A bit of a correction, there were three Griqua states, the East and West Griqualands, plus the state of Philippopolis in what became the western part of the Orange Vrijstaat.

Also, amen on everything, it's so hard to find good info on Griqua history.

Oh yeah, forgot about Philippolis. As someone who used to live in South Africa, I really wish I visited the Free State more often. However, I did get to visit Philippolis, and enjoyed my stay. Did not realize it was a part of a Griqua State though, at the time. I guess that explains the high amount of Coloureds in town.
