The needed and important religion thread
I know I am opening pandoras box far worse than any communist/fascist thread could ever be by opening this thread.
And even worse by proclaiming I am a religious, christian person.
But what is your opinion of religion? Do you like it, do you hate it? And do you follow any religion?

Re: The needed and important religion thread
I personally do not follow any religion but I do believe that their is a higher power some where out there. I personally have no idea what it is but If we die we may find out. My opinion about religion is that you have to believe what you want but you mustn't bother other people with it. If you want to do something in name of religion it is good that you follow this Schedule:

This a rather simplistic but in everyday life effective method, if you ask me. Problem is, for example with conversion and missionary religions. (Example is Jehovas Witnesses) Now matter how much they annoy peopel by tryin to convert you, they do not harm anyone and are probably one of the nicest people around (Besides their whole thing about shunning those that stopped following their religion)
or when some people like it and some don't. Then you get a moral problem. But this is a rather interesting chart nontheless.

That is true. It absolutely creates a moral question. I think this may can be fixed sometimes to search for a small and specific group of people and ask all of them if they like what you are going to do. If one of them dislikes it than you set him out of the group. For example you gonna buy a strawberry cake for your friends but one of them dislikes strawberry, well than you get a small piece of another cake he likes for example a chocolate cake. Now your whole group likes what you have done.

Re: The needed and important religion thread
For your situation, it is true indeed. This would be an feasible idea.
But what about more "important" matters where you can't divide things up. A lot of things, good and bad, are influenced by religion or religion is an major incentive to do it. So if one group of people in an nation, for example, like your idea and one doesn't (Like literally everytime) and your idea is influenced by religious teachings, what shall we do?
Maybe a bit more gripping: A group of people subscribe to liberation theology and want to help oppressed workers in an latin american nation. (Cold war in a nutshell ) What shall we do? According to your chart, they can't do it, because there are people who do not like the thing that is done to them (You take away their power to have cheap labour) but other do like it (the workers) and you can't seperate those groups in this instance.

Well I think you make a big point. In that case you have to negotiate with both groups to find a proper solution for the problem. I know that is might fail but it is worth trying.

Re: The needed and important religion thread
I'm not personally religious. A higher being could've created us but I believe we can never know if that is true. I disagree with a lot of the teachings of some religions. People should be free to believe as they choose.

I am religious (Christian to be exact) and I am going to ask the inevitable question: How about those Crusades?

Re: The needed and important religion thread
I am not that happy about those things as a christian. They were the exact opposite of Jesus teachings. (like the church xD)Darkstar399x wrote:How about those Crusades?
And only happend because of geopolitical reasons, and the legitimation was a lie.
I am a religious person, so I am favourable to religions. However I am very sceptic towards organized religion, like the church.

Re: The needed and important religion thread
I am religious and like most people today I am skeptical towards organized(prelate)religion. logically it can be proven that a higher being or first clause must exist but wather that clause is sapient or if so does it interfere in human workings cannot be proven logically. As for prelate religions such the Anglican church or the catholic church or the 12er shia from my personal experience the type of people who tend to reach high up in those organizations are exactly the type of folk you dont want running your church, not to mention that it turns faith in a commodity rather something deeply personal. last I do believe that if people dont have religion and God to worship they will inevitable start worshiping things down here such kings or states or ideologies, one only needs look at the soviets who turned Lenin into an idol just the same ancient cultures did their rulers. the Nazis and other nationalist likewise worshiped the sate as their idol.

Re: The needed and important religion thread
I think especially your last part is interesting:
That people who do not believe in spirituality will more often than not start to whorship earthly things and beings. (Idols, Celebrities, states and so on)
While I'd say Lenin was only whorshipped because Stalin saw it as an easy way to keep the populus obedient, I definetly agree with you that the populus, which turned more and more towards atheism, started to replace god with Lenin in some way.
I definetly agree with you on the organized part. I can only speak for christianity, but it definetly seems like the higher ups forgot what they once believed in, to whorship the earthly god called money.

Re: The needed and important religion thread
I have no problem with religion, as long as it's effect on people is with their consent, or if it's a personal thing.
For example, a politician can be religious, but I believe he should separate his religious beliefs from the secular institution of law-making and governing, especially with such diverse nations nowadays.
