Crisis of the Third Century Empty Crisis of the Third Century

Post by Alexander I (Abraxis) Sat Jul 08, 2017 7:31 pm

  • What was known about the Roman Empire during the crisis?
  • Or the Gallic/Palmyrene Empire, which split off of Rome?
  • What led up to the crisis?

Answers to these questions + general discussion about this event will be talked about down here (or at least I hope that it will).

"What was known about the Roman Empire during the crisis?"
How should I know? I don't care about that period of time

"Or the Gallic/Palmyrene Empire, which split off of Rome?"
Look at my answer above

"What led up to the crisis? "

Crisis of the Third Century Empty Re: Crisis of the Third Century

Began after the death of Emperor Severus Alexander. Troops killed him after he began negotiating and bribing Germanic tribes to keep them from attacking instead of meeting them in battle, which many Romans saw as cowardly. The death of the emperor basically lead to the start of the Crisis, though Rome had systematic problems in its military and government that allowed powerful generals and commanders to attempt to take over the Empire. After Severus Alexander's death, the empire basically went into chaos for like 50 years. Huge amounts of inflation, almost constant civil war, plague, increasing feudalism, and the decline of the urban population centers almost lead to the empire's complete collapse.

I made a flag of for the Gallic Empire on /r/Vexillology once.

Crisis of the Third Century 41XAWgG

The three circles represent the three provinces (Gaul, Britannia, And Hispania)

The green represents the grass and fertile soil

The blue represents the shores that all the provinces have
