South African History Thread Empty South African History Thread

I've seen a few country-specific general history threads, and figured I'd make one for one of my favorite countries to study, South Africa. Feel free to discuss anything and everything relating to South African history here! ^^

Fun fact: South Africans like to argue over whether the reddish color on the current flag is orange or red. In truth, it's chili red, chosen to be in between the two colors. Orange of course favoured by the Afrikaaners, and red preferred by the British South Africans.

Really? I always thought it was obviously red, but I guess it makes sense to make it look like both colours, considering the shared history of both Afrikaaners and the English

Yeah, it is. The dispute still lives on though, and you'll see Brits with redder sections and Boers with orange sections.

Me too, I never really hear about South Africa during that time.

South Africa was a part of the allies, and mostly fought in North African and European theatres, with the Royal Air Corps being the main force for South Africans in the latter theatre.

I do think there were factions of Afrikaaners who rallied to join the Axis. Those folks ended up being arrested, however.
