Roman Republic`s Greatest Enemy
Who do you consider to be the greatest enemy that the Roman Republic fought?

Maybe itself, considering how many civil wars and coups it had.

I'd definitely say Carthage. If ancient Rome was the Michael Jordan of ancient civilizations then Carthage under Hannibal would be to Rome what the Bad Boy Pistons under Isaiah Thomas was to Jordan, they were the crucible that turned them into the greatest ever.

Re: Roman Republic`s Greatest Enemy
Maybe carthage was the roman republic's greatest enemy, But the greatest enemy of the roman empire was the Parthian empire.
People really underestimate the crucial effect that Trajan's parthian campaign had on the roman empire. Trajan failed to attain the vast and rich resources of the east, Which stopped roman expansion far more than teutoburg forest ever did.
The empire would still linger on for 1336 years, But the age of an expanding roman state was gone.

Carthage, hands down. You don't really hear about Parthian generals crossing the Alps and rampaging through the Italian mainland for 15 years.

I would have chosen the germanic tribes, but since they were not in the poll i just chose the Parthian empire.

The germanic tribes were a relatively minor threat before Rome became an empire.

But they were extremely difficult to dominate and they were the ones to put an end to Rome.

Yes they were the ones who put an end to the "Roman Empire." The question in this thread was the "Roman Republic`s" greatest enemy. There is another thread about the Roman Empire's greatest enemy on here that would better suit your answer.

Cartage by far. Hannibal crossed the Alps with elephants. You don't hear about that every day.

Absolutely Carthage. Not only due to the intense rivalry and warfare between them, but because had Hannibal not been called back to Africa during his pillaging of Italy Rome would be a mere footnote in history. If there's one Empire that came the closest to destroying Rome in Antiquity, it's without a doubt Carthage.

Re: Roman Republic`s Greatest Enemy
Definitely Carthage. Rome's first rival was easily the greatest until Persia and the Goths decided to screw everything up

Since were talking about the Republic, and not the Empire, it's easily Carthage.
